With inspiring monthly lectures given by top experts in their field, together with special interest days, day visits and cultural holidays both at home and abroad, joining The Arts Society is a great way to be entertained, to learn, have fun and make new and lasting friendships.

You might also like to volunteer to help conserve and preserve our artistic heritage. We offer opportunities to learn new skills, meet people with similar interests and support the arts within our local community. We also support a number of local and regional artistic projects and activities.

Fashion, Feathers and Fury: Women’s Fight for Change

Lecturer: Tessa Boase

Why did the RSPB refuse to let Tessa Boase visit their archives when she was writing their early history? This lecture will shine a light on the story of a time when every woman of every class wore a hat, and that of the brave eco-feminists who fought back on behalf of the birds.

Tessa Boase is a freelance journalist, lecturer and campaigner with an interest in uncovering the stories of invisible women in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since uncovering the feminist origins of the RSPB, she has been campaigning for public recognition of its female founders.
