The trip will include a visit to the Richard III visitor centre where tea/coffee and biscuits will be served on arrival followed by a one hour talk called ‘The King under the Carpark talk.’ We wiil then have a self-led visit to the ‘Dynasty, Death & Discovery’ exhibition, having listened to the morning's lecture this will be particularly interesting. At 1.15pm a buffet lunch will be served and includes sandwiches, cake, fruit platter, and tea/coffee. In the afternoon we will walk to Leicester Cathedral for a guided tour. We are planning a day visit to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford, including a tour of the theatre in the morning, and attendance at the Matinee performance of ‘The Tempest’ starring Sir Kenneth Branagh as Prospero and directed by Sir Richard Eyre.

Our Autumn visit will be to Boughton House in Northamptonshire. 

We will visit this magnificent house, gardens and estate by coach. On arrival we will be split into groups and there will be guided tours of the house and gardens. This will be followed by a buffet style lunch after which we will be taken on a tour of the estate in our coach with a guide. The house which has lifts between the floors will be for our exclusive use. 

Boughton House (The English Versailles) Northamptomshire home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry. 

It is a blend of the intimate and the grand, drawing its inspiration from the Palace of Versailles. There are village like Tudor courtyards contrasting with palatial 18th century additions. It contains some of the best-preserved baroque State Rooms in the British Isles which boast tapestries and magnificent paintings by artists such as El Greco, Gainsborough and Van Dyke. We will have an exclusive guided tour of the house and garden followed by a cold buffet lunch. In the afternoon we will board our coach with a guide and tour the estate giving us the opportunity to learn about the symbiotic relationship between the House and its surroundings.

Kelmscott Manor dates from 1570 with a late 17th century wing, it is grade 1 listed and is on the National Heritage list for England. It became the country retreat of renowned writer, designer and activist William Morris in 1874. He and his family lived there until his death in 1896, and it became known as Morris's 'Heaven on Earth'. It served as a great inspiration for him and spawned numerous designs and writings. We will have a guided tour followed by lunch after which we will go by coach to Buscot Park which is close by.

Buscot Park is a late18th Century house built for a local landowner, Edward Townsend. The estate was purchased by Lord Faringdon in1889 who greatly enlarged the house and commissioned Harold Pete to design the famous Italianate water garden. He was a significant collector of Victorian and Old Master paintings by Rembrandt, Botticelli and pre-Raphaelite works including Sir Edward Burne-Jones series, 'The Legend of the Briar Rose'. A talk explaining the collection, house and gardens has been arranged for us after which we will be free to explore.

Rodmarton Manor

Rodmarton manor was built using local materials and local craftsmen, between 1909-1929 by Ernest Barnsley. Barnsley was a follower of William Morris, who was at the time one of the leaders of the English Arts and Crafts movement.

At the time it was felt that furniture was being mass produced and
poorly made, and the house went on to be described by the designer
Charles Ashbee as the single best example of the Arts and Crafts
movement. Today, it remains as such, full of beautifully crafted
furniture and hanging tapestries. The gardens consist of a glorious
plot of 8 acre Cotswold garden, beautifully and lovingly tended.

Corinium Museum

The Corinium Museum in Cirencester, houses one of the largest
concentrations of Roman mosaics in the country outside of London.
Its highly significant finds and antiquities result from Corinium
Dobunnorum being the capital of Britannia Prima.

The day will consist of:

• Travel to Rodmarton by coach
• Tea/Coffee & biscuits on arrival
• Guided private tour of the house

• Travel by coach to Corinium museum
• Return coach home

The castle was open especially for our visit.

Patricia Weinbren and Lynne Henderson escorted 49 members of our Arts Society to Grimsthorpe Castle and Park. We travelled by coach provided by Catteralls coach company from Royal Leaminton Spa, the journey took  just over an hour and half. On arrival we were greeted with light refreshments in the barn after which we walked (buggies were provided if needed) to the Castle and divided into 3 groups, each group was given a guided tour of the house which was beautiful and well worth the visit. The tour took approx. one hour. The castle has been owned for 500 years by successive generations of the same family united under one ancient title, The Barony of Willoughby de Eresby.

Following the tour we had a ‘tea lunch’ of sandwiches, scones, cream/cake. The newly opened gift shop was available for us to browse in. After lunch there was a guided coach trip round the extensive park land. The members commented on how lovely the house and grounds were and there was great interest in the fact that we were ‘ahead of the game’ by visiting before the new series of ‘Bridgerton’, (which was filmed at Grimsthorpe) was released by Netflix since once that had been launched the castle was expecting many more visitors.
